Le Château de Valesne s’intègre parfaitement au paysage de la vallée de l’Indre. Il apparaît dans un écrin de verdure au détour de la route qu’empruntait Balzac et qui va de Pont-de-Ruan à Saché. Il est implanté sur les coteaux surplombant la vallée de l’Indre, sur sa rive Sud. La vue à partir du château s’étend largement sur la vallée, sur un paysage de prés et de boqueteaux. Du côté opposé, le domaine est adossé à une forêt qui constitue le fond du parc sur sa façade sud. Le château est entouré d’un jardin à la française et d’un parc paysagé créés par le paysagiste tourangeau Louis Decorges dans les années 1920.
Les perspectives du château sont marquées par des bassins suivant deux axes orthogonaux. Les allées et les bassins sont ponctués de conifères taillés et de haies de buis. Au sud, descendant du bois vers le château, un escalier d’eau s’épanche de bassin en bassin pour s’épanouir dans une large vasque. A l’Est, dominé par “l'oratoire de Balzac“, s’étale un long miroir d’eau.

History of the Château de Valesne
Les origines, suppose t-on, remontent au XIIIème siècle avec la construction d’une maison forte. Au cours du XIVème siècle, transformation progressive en demeure seigneuriale. La tour centrale est datée du XVème siècle tandis que les deux ailes auraient été construites au XVIIIème siècle. De nombreux remaniements datent de la fin du XIXème et du début du XXème siècle (lucarnes, ouverture de fenêtres ou de portes...).
Début du XIVème siècle: le château appartient à Guillaume de Sainte Maure, chancelier de France. 1334: à la mort de Guillaume de Sainte Maure, le fief de Valesne revient à Allez de Brisay, à qui Guillaume l’avait concédé. 1376: Allez de Brisay vend Valesne au neveu de Guillaume de Sainte Maure, Jean.
1457: le seigneur est Charles de Sainte Maure. 1496: Antoinette de Sainte Maure, fille de Charles, apporte le château en dot lors de son mariage avec François II Baraton, grand échanson de France, Conseiller et chambellan du roi François 1er.
1522: Gabriel-Olivier Baraton, fils du précédent. 1543: Louis Baraton, fils de Gabriel-Olivier. Meurt sans descendance mâle. 1543: François de Maillé, conseiller, secrétaire du Roi, échevin de Tours, devient le seigneur de Valesne.
1550-1692: Famille de Rouxellé, vieille famille issue de la région de Cholet. 1692: Joseph-Elisée de Coutances en devient le propriétaire et transforme considérablement le château. Il en laisse le souvenir avec la représentation de ses armes au-dessus de l’une des portes de Valesne. 1698: Retour à la famille de Rouxellé (veuves des anciens seigneurs).
1737: le propriétaire est Charles Gabriel de Chérité de la Verdrie. 1765: René de Péan, chevalier, commissaire de la Marine, en est le seigneur à cette date. Il meurt en 1767. 1776: François de Remigeoux, page de la petite Ecurie du Roi en 1776 et représentant de la noblesse aux Etats Généraux en 1789. C’est le dernier seigneur de l’ancien régime.
1803: Valesne devient la propriété de Jean de Margonne, par son mariage avec Anne de Savary. 1813-1848: Balzac vient à Saché et fait la connaissance des Margonne qui deviennent ses amis et l’hébergent lors de ses voyages en Touraine, jusqu’à sa mort en 1850. Valesne, abandonné et inhabitable, est l’un des buts de promenade de Balzac et l’inspire pour “Le Lys dans la vallée” (où il le dénomme Frapesle). 1858: Marie-Angélique Salmon de Maison-Rouge, arrière-petite-cousine de Jean de Margonne, hérite de Valesne et le cède en 1859 à son demi-frère Joseph-Amédée. 1891: le château est toujours à l’abandon et vendu à un ingénieur brésilien, Monsieur Seheult, qui le remet en état et l’habite.
1917: la veuve de Monsieur Seheult vend Valesne à Monsieur Paul Métadier.
1986: Madame Jacqueline Massy-Métadier, héritière et propriétaire de Valesne, en fait don à l’association Pro Musicis.
The park of the Château de Valesne
Le cadastre de 1813 permet de constater que le parc offrait alors une vue très différente. En effet, le château se situait au milieu d’une étendue “sauvage”, avec sur la partie est, un potager clos de murs, et vers le nord-est, un pigeonnier.
Après l’achat de la propriété par Monsieur Paul Métadier en 1917, celui-ci souhaite donner un autre écrin au château et il fait alors appel au paysagiste Louis Decorges. Ce dernier crée un jardin de type mixte, constitué d’une partie régulière et d’une partie paysagère. A proximité du château, Louis Decorges a choisi des lignes classiques avec un jardin à la française, composé de parterres structurés et de jeux d’eau. Ce parterre est bordé au sud par le bois de Valesne et laisse la place, au nord, à une grande étendue paysagère descendant en pente douce vers la vallée de l’Indre.

“...enfin, derrière le château s’étend le parc boisé. La façade méridionale s’ouvre, en effet, sur un décor utilisant la pente du coteau couronné d’arbres ; un escalier d’eau constitué de quatre bassins séparés par cinq ressauts gazonnés et se terminant par une large vasque creusée de main d’homme, évoque quelque peu le style des grands bassins de Versailles. Quant à la façade qui regarde le levant, elle est comme prolongée par des jardins à la française et un long miroir d’eau situé dans la perspective du val, le tout constituant un admirable ensemble empreint d’harmonie et d’équilibre. Le visiteur se trouve, en effet, “devant une composition aux lignes puissantes et gracieuses où s’harmonisent l’élégance de l’eau et celle des plantations”, tandis que des fleurs donnent couleur à la verdure. Là, l’eau joue un rôle de décoration et donne à tout l’ensemble, château et parc, un charme indéfinissable.”
The large living room and library
The Grand Salon is decorated with mural paintings, realized in the twenties and thirties by the painter Raphaël Delorme.
This room will be, after the restoration of the chateau, a concert hall (for an audience of 100 people) and will hold conferences and seminars...
Adjacent to the Grand Salon, a library will serve as a research facility for subjects central to the Art and Peace mission.
Raphaël Delorme (Caudéran 1885 - Paris 1962)
Student of Pierre-Gustave Artus and Gustave Lauriol, at the “Ecole des Beaux-Arts” of Bordeaux. Then, he becomes stage designer in Paris.
“He was famous for his good sense of perspective. He loved perspective...He would have been a stage designer all his life if our rich cousin, who had the desire to support him, didn’t ask him to leave his profession to become a painter. This man with a beautiful face... had two qualities : noone could change his behaviour and he had the purest sense of humour.” (Chaval, Souvenirs en vrac, in Bizarre, 1966, p.6).
So, his rich cousin, Mrs. Métadier, owner of the chateau of Valesnes in Indre-et-Loire, asks him to do some paintings in order to help him. He decides to be a painter and begins to participate to exhibitions at the Salon d’Automne, at the Société Nationale, at the Salon des Tuileries, in Tours and in Bordeaux. He doesn’t meet the success but it doesn’t affect him . However he is very proud of his unique customer, the Maharadjah of Kapurtala who owns a house in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris for whom he buys a painting of Delorme. He is friend with the sculptors Janniot and Forestier, very close also to Dupas and Despujols. Delorme creates impeccable compositions with cold tones and a strange photographic precision. His egyptian, greek or venetian scenes, limited by strict architectures, populated with nude and muscular acrobats are like a parody and we can find in it an unusual and mocking charm.

Valesne and Balzac
Le roman de Balzac “Le lys dans la vallée” se situe sur les bords de l’Indre, entre Saché et Pont-de-Ruan. L’héroïne, Madame de Mortsauf, habite un château situé sur la rive droite de l’Indre, à Clochegourde. Ce château est à l’emplacement du château de la Chevrière mais se présente sous l’architecture du manoir de Vonnes, à quelques kilomètres de là. On peut apercevoir le Château de la Chevrière et le Manoir de Vonnes de l’autre côté de l’Indre.
Le héros, Félix, qui tombe amoureux de Mme de Mortsauf, habite chez des amis au château de Frapesle. Il s’agit du château de Valesne. La description qu’en donne Balzac est assez exacte (il parle notamment de la tour centrale).A l’époque où venait Balzac, le château de Valesne était presque abandonné. Seuls des métayers y vivaient. Le parc était un parc paysager, fait de pelouses et de bouquets d’arbres. Une terrasse sur le côté nord permettait d’apercevoir l’Indre, les vignes qui tapissaient les côteaux ainsi que le château de la Chevrière. A l’emplacement du miroir d’eau se trouvait un potager clos de murs. Balzac a appelé Valesne du nom de Frapesle en hommage, pense-t-on, à la propriété d’une de ses amies, Zulma Carraud, qui se situe près d’Issoudun dans l’Indre.

The Château de Valesne
Far from being considered as an external sign of wealth, on the contrary the chateau imposes itself as a “need” to serve the work of Art and Peace, a need for an anchor, for drawing resources from such a magnificent setting, providing all of us (artists and public) with the best conditions for access to philosophy and humanism based on the spirituality of art.
A place for meeting and exchange
The Château de Valesne is first and foremost a place of exchange, reflection, research,
training, master-classes and more. Thanks to its privileged location (close to the traditional itinerary of the Chateaux of the Loire) it will become a location for concerts, exhibitions, theater, cinema, etc, a cultural stop-off on the tourist trail.
The strong and simple beauty of the chateau and the tranquility created by the surrounding woods provides the perfect setting to heighten the sense of artistic inspiration.
Valesne will offer resident artists time for reflection, oneness with their inner selves, something that has become quite rare in our modern world. They have the mission, at their own scale, of transfiguring it through their art.
They will also find a convivial place for friendly exchange here with other artists with whom they can share their experience --- their knowledge and work together.
The Centre will offer them the possibility to introduce themselves and their work through concerts, exhibitions and meetings held in the chateau's Auditorium
as well as in Touraine and othe
r regions of France.
Artistic inspiration
Le château de Valesne, demeure historique du XIVème siècle, est situé en plein coeur de la Touraine, sur la commune de Saché le long de la vallée de l’Indre, terre d’inspiration de Balzac, qui cite le Château de Valesne dans “Le Lys dans la vallée”.
Un siècle plus tard, c’est le sculpteur Calder qui en fera sa terre d’élection et, grâce à la famille Métadier, alors propriétaire des châteaux de Saché et de Valesne, s’installera à Saché.
C’est donc le lieu idéal pour approfondir les fondements intellectuels et spirituels de la mission de l’artiste.

The experience of Pro Musicis
Perform in front of an audience that is not used to classical and contemporary music is a revelatory experience. Here the artists are aware of communicating the essence of their art.
All Pro Musicis musicians speak of how moved they are when they see the faces of their underprivileged audiences listening to them, fill with joy and peace. The dialogue following the concerts are full of the same happiness of having shared an exceptional moment of beauty together. The vision of their own career is transfigured. They realize that they have a misson to fulfill as artist.
Forty-two yeas of experience have shown that during the short time of a concert, the shared beauty of music can provide meaning of hope, happiness and peace to lives that are deprived of it.
Setting-up of an international artists'residence
Open to musicians of course, but also to representatives of other arts (painting, sculpture, dance, theatre, cinema, etc.), it allows artists to meet each other, exchange, create and present their work to the general public of all ages. This will enable them to become fully aware of their place in a world in search of essential values while so many are jeopardized today.
Les artistes - musiciens, peintres, sculpteurs, etc - seront accueillis au sein du château pour des séjours plus ou moins longs selon les projets qui seront développés.
Ils y trouveront tout à la fois un lieu de retraite qui leur permettra de prendre le temps de réfléchir, de créer mais aussi un lieu d’échange convivial avec d’autres artistes avec lesquels ils pourront confronter leur expérience, leur savoir.
Le Centre leur offrira la possibilité de se faire connaître par des concerts, des expositions, des rencontres organisés sur place, dans la région et en France.
A place for sharing
Sharing with underprivileged audiences
Artists of all disciplines will be invited to meet audiences who do not have access to culture, either due to a lack of means or an absence of knowledge of the artistic world, or else because of physicasl incapacity such as for the elderly, handicapped, sick and chronically ill people, homeless., inmates in detention and others.
Transportation might be organized also for underpriviledged groups of people to come to Valesne and enjoy an exhibition of paintings,a concert and especially a personal contact with the artists..For both artists and audience, this would be a unique and constructive experience.
Sharing with the youth
Considerable provision will also been made for sharing with schoolchildren, students and young people in general. They will be invited to attend rehearsals (music, theatre, etc.), master-classes, films, concerts and exhibitions on a given theme that will allow them to explore art in various ways.
A centre for research into artistic inspiration, the creative source of civilisation
The specificity of Art and Peace is also the desire to further the intellectual and spiritual bases of the artist's mission.
What drives men to create? What have been the sources of inspiration throughout history? How can artists influence society ?
All of these questions are tackled by Art and Peace during lectures, conferences and panel discussions that will bring together personalities from the world of the arts, philosophy, theology, biology, psychology, medicine and economics to provide the viewpoint of each of these disciplines on artistic inspiration and its impact on society.
Along with these lectures, meetings will be oranized between representatives of artistic cultures from East and West, from the Southern and the Northern Hemispheres with the aim of sharing respective discoveries for mutual enrichment. They will be accompanied by artistic performances from the countries involved.
The reports of these lectures and meetings will be published by internetand the artistic performances will be recorded to be presented to the public and to higher education students.

A place tourists
La situation du château de Valesne en plein coeur de la vallée de l’Indre, à proximité du circuit des Châteaux de la Loire, le place sur un itinéraire culturel et touristique très riche de potentialités.
A une vingtaine de kilomètres de Tours, ville étape du TGV Atlantique, le château de Valesne est proche de Paris (Paris-Tours en TGV: 57 mn) et de l’aéroport de Roissy (1h35).
Le château et le parc à la française sont en cours d’inscription à l’Inventaire des Monuments Historiques.
Ils seront ouverts aux touristes qui pourront bénéficier également des activités artistiques proposées sur place.En liaison avec le Comité Départemental du Tourisme et l’Office de Tourisme du Pays d’Azay le Rideau, une offre spécifique pourra être proposée.
Valesne ouvrira également ses portes lors des Journées du Patrimoine ou des Rendez-vous au Jardin organisées par le Ministère de la Culture, s’inscrivant ainsi dans des manifestations nationales.
Un lieu de location
Cette situation géographique favorable du château permet d’envisager également la location de l’auditorium pour des réunions, des séminaires, des soirées de prestige...
Art and Peace proposera également d’organiser des manifestations spécifiques, des concerts ou des représentations privées... en fonction des activités en cours à Valesne, destinées à des particuliers, des entreprises, des comités d’entreprise...
L’auditorium pourra également être loué à des artistes, des organisations artistiques qui pourront ainsi se faire connaître auprès du public local et touristique ou effectuer des enregistrements.
Conclusion
L’ensemble de ces activités :
Résidence d’artistes, concerts, expositions de peinture, de sculpture...., représentations théâtrales, chorégraphiques, cinématographiques, enregistrements, colloques sur l’inspiration artistique, conférences, participation à des manifestations touristiques, location pour des entreprises, des organismes, des compagnies artistiques, etc donnera à Art and Peace au Château de Valesne une ouverture à tous les publics, sur le plan régional, national et international, qui permettra des rencontres et des échanges dans un lieu privilégié, contribuant ainsi à répandre la notion de l’art comme vecteur de paix.

This little building near the chateau will receive artists in residence.
Refection of the roof with flat tiles, replacement of rafters, restoring of chimney shafts and windows. Complete rehabilitation of the two interior levels : three studios including one for a handicapped person. Specific precautions will be taken to ensure audio insulation between bedrooms and outsides. Creation of two lavatories and a shower room to receive visitors and outside workers. Restoration of the façades.

Restoration of the castle\Step 2 : 2010 - 2011 Aim : to continue the restoration of the chateau, to develop the residence for artists and the exhibitions, to create a convivial kitchen for the persons in residence and visitors.
2010 : Restoration of "Petit Valesne"
Touraine is a region renowned for its cultural and artistic heritage but also for its gastronomy. That is why this place will be important for the artists who will be able to meet and eat together in a familial atmosphere but also for visitors who will be able to eat meals of quality.
Refection of the roof with flat tiles with replacement of rafters, restoring of chimney shafts and windows. Complete rehabilitation of the two interior levels : - Apartment for the house keeper on the 2 levels. - Apartment on the 1st floor. - Inn on the ground floor (restaurant hall, kitchen with equipment, lavatories etc.…) Restoration of the façades.
2011 : Fittings of the top floor
Five bedrooms with bathroom and lavatory, including two bedrooms with piano. Specific precautions will be taken to ensure audio insulation between bedrooms and outsides.
2011 : 1st floor
West wing : - Chapel- meditation room - Two bedrooms including one for handicapped person. - Creation of an elevator in the XVth century tower.
Central building : - Restoration of the « Grand Salon » in order to receive chamber music concerts, events, meetings, lectures…approachable to the disabled. - Vertical installation with the ground floor.

Restoration of the castle Step 3 : 2011 - 2012 Aim : to protect the site and to facilitate the access for all the audiences and visitors.
2011 : Outside fittings
Grounds : the 55 acre grounds are composed of rolling lawns, a forest and a French garden designed by a reknowned landscape architect, Louis Decorges, in the beginning of the XXth century. It is one of the few remaining intact gardens from this landscape architect.
Outdoor concerts will be held during the year. The use of the grounds reflects the Art and Peace’s commitment to the arts, to beauty, to historical and environmental preservation.
- Outside lighting. - Creation of parking lots. - Enclosure. - Installation of a new entrance gate at the main entrance on the east side of the park (video, automatic entrance, lighting). - Installation of an iron gate between the Chateau and Petit Valesne (as existing before).
2012 : Renovation of the façades
- Building up. - Removal of the existing plaster when necessary. - Restoration of the stone frameworks with replacement of the plasters. - Lime plaster, frameworks in stone - Replacement of the windows by wooden windows with double glass partition.
Auditorium
Polyvalent 350 seats auditorium building project
Conçue par l’architecte André Georgel, cette salle s’inscrit parfaitement dans l’environnement de la propriété, en plein coeur de la nature. L’architecte a utilisé les particularités de la topographie et du sol pour concevoir ce projet très soucieux de l’impact écologique : bardages en bois, essences locales pour les plantations, tapis végétal sur la toiture du bâtiment...

Invisible du château, la salle offrira aux artistes de toutes disciplines du matériel professionnel et des locaux adaptés à leur art tandis que les spectateurs/auditeurs profiteront d’un cadre agréable et harmonieux. Nous vous invitons à la découvrir !
Le parc de stationnement des voitures implanté à l’entrée de la propriété s’inscrit dans une clairière existante en bordure du parc.
La nature du sol, en sable rouge argileux, explique la présence d’une carrière voisine du site, permettant d’envisager la couche de roulement avec ce matériau naturel utilisé pour la constitution des allées du domaine.

Le projet prévoit, entre les allées de stationnement, la plantation d’arbres et de buissons dont les essences seront celles des végétaux qui bordent la clairière.
L’accès au bâtiment assuré par une allée piétonnière en provenance du parc de stationnement côté nord et menant au château vers le sud, s’enfonce en pente douce dans le sol naturel pour donner accès au hall d’entrée de l'auditorium.
Le bâtiment lui-même, profitant de cette constitution favorable du terrain, est partiellement enterré dans le sol et présente ainsi une hauteur inférieure à 6 mètres au point culminant du volume.
La couverture, constituée d’une dalle en béton armée, est entièrement recouverte d’une couche végétale, constituée d’un tapis de sedum (plante grasse rampante) cultivé sur une couche drainante. Réalisée en pente douce suivant l’axe de la salle de concert, elle descend jusqu’au niveau du sol naturel dans sa partie centrale, venant couvrir les deux entrées

Le volume, très discret par rapport à l’environnement, est habillé de bardage en bois lasuré noir assurant son intégration dans le cadre végétal.
Dans la salle, d’une capacité totale de 350 places, les spectateurs sont accueillis sur des banquettes en gradin, en forme d’amphithéâtre. La disposition adoptée permettra, dans certaines occasions, avec un éclairage adapté, d’accueillir une audience limité à 125 places tout en gardant à la salle son aspect convivial.
Le programme est complété par les locaux annexes nécessaires au fonctionnement de l’établissement : régie - loges - sanitaires. En outre, trois salles, pouvant être réunies en un seul volume par l’ouverture de cloisons amovibles, peuvent être utilisées à l’occasion de séminaires ou de réceptions.
